Exchanging Money

It is wise not to change to many dollars into colones, since most of the places accept dollars (in good conditions, not ripped, written on, etc), stay away from $100 dollars bills most of the places will not take them because of counterfeiting scams.

Most places also accept credit cards like MasterCard and Visa; you might have some problems with American Express.

There are about 25 banks between national and privately owned. Banco Popular ATH and Bac San José have the most ATM's and branches through out the country, even in the smaller towns. Bank hours for national banks are from 9-3, most have offices that close later and open on weekends. The private banks that have branches in the malls normally open until 7-8 p.m.

Even though the bank system in Costa Rica is more efficient than other countries in Latin America, the lines sometimes are long specially in the government banks.

You can also use travelers check in Costa Rica.
