Costa Rica has one of the oldest democracies in the continent. Costa Rica is a democratic
Republic, under the constitution of 1949 all citizens are guaranteed equality under the law.
The right to own property, the right to vote, the right to assembly, freedom of speech and the right
to habeas corpus. The government consists of three branches, the Judicial Branch which consist of civil, criminal, appellate and constitutional courts. The Legislative Branch consist of 57 individually elected deputies and the Executive Branch consist of the President, two Vice-Presidents and advisors. The President and the Legislative Assembly are elected for four-year
terms. That are two main political parties National Liberation Party and the United Social Christian
Party, but there are about 20-25 registered political parties.

Costa Rica has one of the best educations in Latin America. Having a literacy rate of 96% and 20% of their national budget going towards education it is not surprising that many national and international universities are located here. These universities offer degrees in many different majors. Most of the secondary education is also provided by the public school only 30% by private accredited schools. There are also some schools that offer a North American or European education from pre-kinder through high school. |
